Judy Cohen was a guidance counselor for twenty four years and worked with students in grades 9-12 helping them socially, emotionally, and educationally. She compiled a Freshmen handbook, a study skills guide and a Senior handbook. She instituted and successfully ran support groups for students with drug and alcohol issues, as well as for students who needed grief counseling. For many years, she has tutored students for the SAT and helped them with the college application process and study skills. She is currently an adjunct English professor at a community college.
Mrs. Cohen received a BS degree in education and an M.Ed. in guidance and psychology. In addition, she has taken post graduate courses in family therapy. For eight years, she wrote a weekly column on guidance issues for the Agawam Advertiser. She has been interviewed by reporters, has appeared on television, will be doing a radio tour and has done numerous presentations to book clubs, PTOs, schools and Rotary Clubs. Currently, she is facilitating a Parenting Group.
Recently, she published a book, From the Guidance Counselor’s Office, which is a collection of vignettes inspired by her family, friends and counselees. She skillfully takes you into her office where you can “listen” to the stories that have been shared and the guidance that has been offered. Her book is packed with ideas, wisdom, solutions, and suggestions concerning parenting skills, choosing the right college, scholastic success and other timely topics. She passes on the lessons she has learned and the insight she has gained.
