Welcome to my website.

I have been a guidance counselor and an educator for over twenty years and have gained so much from my students and their parents. I have listened, I have shared, I have cared and through all of this I have learned.  Issues have been aired, solutions have been sought and growth has occurred, not only growth for my students, but growth for me, too.  Together we have come up with solutions. Some have worked; some haven't. But at least we moved forward.

Many parents have asked me to put together a book concerning the happenings that have transpired in my office and the wisdom and lessons that have been learned. When I retired recently I took their advice!  In From the Guidance Counselor's Office  I share stories concerning parenting issues, college planning, scholastic success, and other timely topics that will stimulate discussion, provide solutions and offer suggestions.  It's an easy to read collection of vignettes inspired by my interaction with high school students, my family and friends.  All the things I would tell my students are in there.

I love working with parents and their kids to help them be "all that they can be", so  I have opened my 'guidance counselor's door' here online, in speaking engagements, presentations at seminars, PTO meetings and book clubs. I facilitate at parenting groups, tutor students for SATs, and help them transition to college. My hope is that my book, my site, and my support will have a positive impact on my readers.  In turn, I look forward to them having a positive impact on mine.

Back to School

Yes, it's almost that time of year. The days are getting a little shorter, the summer is winding down, and thoughts are turning to school. As parents you start thinking about clothes to buy, notebooks to get and you hope  that this school year will be a positive one. Talk to your child about organizing his time, the importance of getting good grades, and the necessity of keeping track of his schoolwork and assignments. Let him know that you are here for him.

Tutoring - Ah, that's a short word, but such an important one. Is it important? Is it necessary? more

Parenting or Pestering?
An excerpt taken From the Guidance Counselor's Office

"In order to parent effectively, it is important to "stay on" your children. You must be aware of what they are doing, not be afraid to ask questions, and be able and willing to establish some rules. In a way, this intrusion can be called pestering, but I would rather euphemistically call it parenting."
